NUTRITION

Nutrition is the science that studies the nutrients in food, how the body uses these nutrients and the relationship between diet, health and disease.  Nutrients provide nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of life; they cannot be manufactured by the body, and must come from an external source.  Essential nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, vitamins and minerals.

Nutrition investigates the metabolic and physiological responses of the body to diet.  Many common health problems can be prevented or alleviated with a healthy diet.  Effective in addressing diseases of deficiency that may be caused by poor diet or extreme environmental factors, nutritional medicine calls for higher, therapeutic doses of basic nutrients to remedy these illnesses and disorders.  With advances in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics, the study of nutrition is increasingly concerned with metabolism and metabolic pathways – the sequence of biochemical steps through which substances in living things change from one form to another.
