Prenatal & POstpartum care
Our goal at PHLEX NYC is to address a somewhat overlooked concept in the PT landscape – TREATING PREGNANCY. And the best part is, all under one roof, a PHLEX EXPERT will oversee your therapies and create customized plans of care outside of your standard OB/GYN appointments.
It is no surprise that pregnancy results in many changes to the body. These changes are hormonal, physiological and structural. This “temporary body” brings with it many uncomfortable and often challenging demands. Especially with all the hustle, bustle and non-stop motion in New York City, having access to physical therapy grade care can help adjust to those demands. We are here to help you through the experience!
We offer the following therapies, services or classes:
PHYSICAL THERAPY - A physical therapist can educate you on posture and specific positions to diminish pressure on the joints, decrease muscle tightness, and help relieve pain. You can get tips on the best positions for pain-free sleeping, sitting, standing and other daily functional activities. There are a variety of soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, and massage techniques that can be performed to improve pelvic misalignments, decrease muscle tightness, and provide pain relief. A physical therapist or instructor will also provide you with specialized stretches and exercises focused on your specific impairments. Whether its stretches to relieve pain or specific therapeutic exercise to improve your strength and fitness level, physical therapy can help you have a pain-free and healthy pregnancy.
ACUPUNCTURE - Acupuncture during pregnancy is completely safe and can benefit mother and baby greatly. Many women begin treatments for fertility and end up continuing acupuncture throughout their pregnancies. Prenatal Acupuncture can address common discomforts and symptoms such as: morning sickness, nausea, heartburn, common aches and pains (knee, ankle, low back, shoulders, carpal tunnel) and even depression.
MASSAGE - Therapeutic massage has been used for centuries to improve overall health, reduce stress, and relieve muscle tension. Massages during pregnancy have often received ambivalent responses from the health community regarding their safety and purpose. Modern investigation and research has shown that prenatal massage therapy can be an instrumental ingredient in women’s prenatal care and should be given careful consideration. Studies show therapeutic massage can reduce back and joint pain, improve circulation, help with edema, reduce muscle tension and headaches, lessen stress and anxiety, enhance restful sleep.
PILATES/YOGA (Private) - Pilates during pregnancy and postpartum helps maintain pelvic floor strength and connection, improves mental focus, aids in prevention of diastasis recti, enhances breath control, improves stability in hip and pelvic muscles, helps with balance and conditions the body in ways other exercise can be too much on the changing body.
THE CORE CONNECTION (Private or Group) - This series of classes teaches the main foundations of a healthy core, how to connect to your deep core muscles and strengthen postural muscles to improve the way you move. You will learn functional exercises to become more efficient, improve performance and reduce chances of injury. These techniques are beneficial not only during exercise, but also throughout daily life and are perfect for all phases: pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.
